Working while you're still at school

You can get a part-time job while you're still at school but you're only allowed to do some types of work and can only work certain hours.

The youngest age you can be to work part-time is 13.  There are types of work that you can and cannot do and you can only work certain hours (see below).

By law you must also have a work permit.

The following information is taken from GOV UK's information on child-employment

During term time

You can work a maximum of 12 hours per week, this includes:

  • a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays
  • a maximum of 5 hours on Saturdays for 13-14 year olds, or 8 hours for 15-16 year olds
  • you cannot work before 7.00am or after 7.00pm

In the school holidays

13-14 year olds can work a maximum of 25 hours a week.  This includes:

  • a maximum of 5 hours on weekdays and Saturdays
  • a maximum of 2 hours on Sunday

15-16 year olds can work a maximum of 35 hours a week.  This includes:

  • a maximum of 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays
  • a maximum of 2 hours on Sunday
