A work placement is your opportunity to spend a period of time outside the classroom, learning about a particular job or area of work. Most people find it very worthwhile because it gives you the chance to see what working life is really like. It can also be a useful thing to add to your CV if you're thinking of applying for a part-time or holiday job.
During your placement, you'll be able to find out what skills employers look for when they're hiring someone to fill a job vacancy.
You will also get the chance to develop your self-confidence and communication skills. This will help you to work better with other people in further or higher education, as well as in your future career.
Work placements are only available from Years 10. You won't be able to do a work placement with your school until you reach this age. The number of hours you work and the pattern of work can vary from job to job. As a rule you should not be asked to work more than eight hours a day and no more than five days in a seven-day period. Remember to get your hours agreed before you start.

Full-time placements
You are likely to be offered a one or two-week full time placement. It means that you will work in a business or organisation for that time, probably doing the same hours as other people who work there.
Extended work placements
Another type of work experience you may be offered is an extended work placement. Here you'll spend one day every week in the workplace over a number of months.
Extended work experience is a central part of the Young Apprenticeship programme which is being offered by some schools in Norfolk, and some other programs.
