You may have the opportunity of Work Experience either in Year 10 or Year 11. Like a lot of things this is changing too. Usually this is offered as a one or two week block, however schools and employers are working together to offer a choice of activities throughout the academic year.
Work experience can give you a taste of the worlds of work and does not necessarily have to be a career path that you are planning to pursue. You will learn life skills from your placement as well as a range of skills specific to the role.
Schools often like students to find their work placements themselves, though in some cases this may be arranged for you. Either way, your placement will be checked with qualified staff to ensure that the correct Health and Safety and Welfare procedures are in place before you start.
The Exchange offers a service to schools where they can either check placements that students have found themselves or offer existing placements to schools for students to follow up. For any further information either contact the Work Related Coordinator within your school or visit The Exchange website.
