What's involved in the Diploma?

Diplomas have different elements and are designed so that you can choose some parts of what you learn according to your own interests and ambitions. You'll probably hear the different elements of your Diploma referred to as Principal learning, Additional/Specialist learning and Generic learning.

Principal learning

This means your study of the broad subject area your Diploma's related to; you'll learn this through a mix of theory and practical skills.

Additional/Specialist learning

This refers to extra subjects you can add on, to tailor your Diploma to your own interests and ambitions.

For example, if you're doing an IT Advanced Diploma, you might want to take a Maths A level as your Additional/Specialist learning.

Your choice of Additional/Specialist learning may effect what degree programmes you can apply for afterwards, so if you have a particular subject or university in mind, do check that your programme will be accepted for entry. Your teacher or Connexions adviser will be able to help you decide.

Generic learning

This is a part of every Diploma programme. It gives you important skills which you will need for successful employment, training and further study.

Generic learning includes:

  • Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT
  • Work experience is an important element of your Diploma – you will spend a total of at least 10 days with employers.
  • A project is also included in your Diploma. This will help develop your ability for independent work and will be an extended piece of work – an essay, performance or practical project – which best shows off your skills. This will replace all other coursework.
  • There are also elements designed around personal learning and thinking skills.

In addition to all these elements, you will also be encouraged to take part in wider activities and challenges such as sport and community involvement.
