Each Diploma is related to a specific subject. Diploma subjects are based around broad industry areas, like creative and media industries or travel and tourism.
By 2011 there will be 17 different subjects of Diploma on offer. This year there are 14 subjects – these are listed and described in the list below.
Business, Administration and Finance (BAF)The BAF Diploma has been developed to provide a solid grounding in business skills for young people who are interested in any kind of business career or hope to run their own business.
You'll get the opportunity to set up and run your own business, selling a product that you have created. You will learn to cope with change, how to remain competitive, and discover how outside factors such as new technologies, consumer trends, environmental issues or globalisation can affect a business.
Construction and the Built Environment (CBE)The CBE Diploma gives you a chance to learn in different settings. You'll learn how the built environment was designed and constructed, how it is used, and how it affects people and communities. But you'll also be doing lots of practical activities such as getting involved in site visits and the planning and building of prestigious projects. You'll then be able to apply everything you've learnt when working on your own projects.
Creative and Media (CM)The CM Diploma allows you to learn valuable skills in different situations. You'll learn about the key themes in creativity and how to think and work creatively. This includes seeing a project through from start to finish, identifying an audience and their needs and learning about the business side of the creative and media industries.
With a Diploma you can progress into further and higher education, training or future employment within or outside the creative and media industries.
EngineeringThe Engineering Diploma opens up the ideas and concepts behind engineering, and how they impact the modern world. You'll be introduced to key engineering principles such as design, materials, electronic systems, maintenance and manufacturing.
You'll also get lots of practical experience and study what makes innovations succeed, how new materials contribute to design and how to develop and launch new ideas.
Environmental and Land-Based Studies (ELB)The ELB Diploma will give you first-hand experience of the opportunities, occupations and career paths offered by the sector. The Diploma has been developed to give you a broad understanding of the current needs of the sector's diverse businesses.
You will learn through doing and this will give you a clear idea of what working life might be like. It will also help you question and challenge outdated stereotypes of what this sector is all about.
Hair and Beauty Studies (HB)The HB Diploma will introduce you to a whole new world. You will take a trip into the past, where you'll study how hair and beauty played its part in ancient cultures and explore what has influenced hair and beauty in society today. You'll then travel into the present where you'll see the science and technology that goes into hair and beauty product research, design and development that is driving the sector forward into the future.
HospitalityThe Hospitality Diploma will give you a taste of the huge range of opportunities, jobs and career paths offered by the industry. Because the sector is driven by customer service, a positive attitude will get you a long way. You may discover a passion for travel, enjoy exotic food, or even become a top chef or hotel and restaurant owner!
Much of the industry is made up of small businesses so the opportunities for entrepreneurship are vast. The Diploma reflects this by teaching you what you need to know to set up and run your own business.
Information Technology (IT)The IT Diploma gives you a chance to learn in different settings. It lets you explore technology, and see, first hand, the role that it plays in organisations, for individuals and in society as a whole.
You'll also learn how to manage and deliver successful IT projects, and be able to apply what you've learnt when working on your own projects.
Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD)The MPD Diploma will give you an insight into the fascinating business of manufacturing. It will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to keep the UK at the forefront of global manufacturing.
The PS Diploma reveals the inner workings of this vibrant, varied and valuable sector. You'll discover how public service organisations operate and gain an appreciation of the social values that sustain them.
A combination of classroom learning and practical experience will motivate and inspire you, so that you steadily build the skills you'll need to work in this or many other sectors.
The Retail Business Diploma takes you behind the shop front to explore every stage of the retail process, from source to supply to sale. Not only that, it will equip you with an understanding of what it takes to set up and run your own business.
You'll also get lots of practical experience and develop the confidence, motivation, enterprise and creativity that you'll need to flourish in this ever-changing environment.
The SHD Diploma will give you an understanding of all four SHD sectors: health, social care, the children's workforce and community justice. It will help you to learn the skills that are important to work successfully in these areas: problem solving, teamworking, communication and creative thinking.
You could take part in virtual learning by using computer simulations, or you could experience working with a real employer. You could meet healthcare scientists, community police officers, adult social care workers or even a prosthetic limb designer along the way.
This Diploma will give you a broad base of understanding and skills that are transferable across the wide range of sport and leisure roles and settings. Learning takes place in a range of contexts so that you develop your knowledge of the industry, its scope and opportunities. At the same time, you'll be learning the importance of leading an active life through working with diverse groups, especially young people.
Communication, teamwork, customer service and 'people skills' are crucial here. By working individually and in teams, you will increase your confidence in engaging with customers.
Lifestyle choices have a major impact on health and wellbeing. Taking this Diploma you will learn that being active can not only affect health but also improve self-confidence.
The TT Diploma gives you a good insight into the industry. Communication, teamwork, customer service and 'people skills' are important here. By working both individually and in teams, you'll become confident in dealing with customers.
This is a dynamic sector where style and image play a big part. You'll develop the relevant skills, knowledge and analytical abilities in context to make learning more interesting and motivating.
