About the Diploma

“A Diploma will appeal if you like practical subjects which you can relate to”

Diplomas are completely new qualifications, being introduced for the first time in 2008. They have been created to provide a real alternative to more traditional education and qualifications and will help you to develop work-relevant skills, as well as English, maths and ICT, in a creative and enjoyable way.

The aim is to provide you with a programme of learning that is interesting and challenging, whilst also getting you ready for life, further learning and the world of work.

A Diploma will appeal if you like practical subjects which you can relate to. It’s flexible, so you can get a deeper knowledge of subjects that you are particularly interested in and broaden your study, perhaps including a language.

Taking a Diploma does not mean that you have to go into a career in that particular area - it leaves your options open. You could choose to go on to further study since a Diploma will give you the skills, knowledge and understanding you need for further or higher education as well as employment and will be welcomed by colleges and universities as well as employers.

However you should talk to a teacher or adviser about your Additional/Specialist learning choices if you plan to go on to a degree course after your Diploma as what you choose may restrict which Degree courses you can take.

If you have a specific university or course in mind, contact the university's admissions office and ask them about which Additional/Specialist learning they recommend. The UCAS website may also have the information you need.
