Apprenticeships

From 16 onwards, if you want to learn while you are working, an Apprenticeship could be a good choice.

Apprenticeships are good if you know what job you want to do. Apprentices work for a company doing a real job – but you also get extra training at a college or specialist training centre.

You work towards an NVQ, which is a nationally recognised qualification, and you get paid. Plus you get job experience. You need to be very committed as your Apprenticeship will take one, two or even five years of training and further study, depending on what Apprenticeship you decide to do.

There are two levels: Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships

  • You work towards an NVQ 2 (similar standard to GCSEs A*–C grade).
  • You study Key Skills and technical knowledge.
  • Apprentices are paid – your pay might increase as you progress.
  • It can lead to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Advanced Apprenticeships

  • You work towards an NVQ 3 (similar standard to A levels).
  • You study further Key Skills and technical knowledge.
  • Advanced apprentices are paid – your pay might increase as you progress.
  • Advanced apprentices are likely to become the technicians and supervisors of the future.
  • It can lead to further occupational qualifications and is also becoming recognised as a way into Higher Education.

How to Apply

If you decide an Apprenticeship is for you, you can find more detailed information by calling the National Apprenticeships line 0800 150 600 to request further information on the areas of work you are interested in. Don't worry, it is a free phone number, so the call won't cost you anything. You can also visit the National Apprenticeships Website

In Norfolk, there are Apprenticeship opportunities in a wide range of career areas, offered by a number of colleges and other training providers.

The most important step is usually to find an employer willing to take you on. Colleges and other training providers often keep lists of businesses who employ Apprentices, but the amount of help you'll get in finding an employer will vary. It is likely that you will need to use your own initiative and contact employers yourself.

Programme Led Apprenticeships

If you can’t find an Apprenticeship you might take a Programme-Led Apprenticeship (PLA). On a PLA you start your Apprenticeship before you find a job and then find an employer later.

This is a great way to get on a fast track route into skilled work, especially if at the beginning you are unable to start work with an employer. On a PLA you work towards specific NVQ units and/or a technical certificate which counts towards your Apprenticeship.
